I take the first sentence back - having visited Rory's website now, I see he plays in a Memphis band so he therefore presumably should be aware of Young Ave. Deli's live sound issues. It's more a place to have a nice meal. I guess he wrote his review without caring about that aspect of Y.A.D., and that's his prerogative.

The show's reviewer who detailed how the drummer marred his experience is apparently completely unfamiliar with Young Avenue Deli, which is renowned even among local garage band vets for having very poor sound and is more a tiny food place whose original building design did not include consideration of live music design necessities. No one in their right mind plays there or attends a show with the expectation that a balanced sound level will be heard (one plays there despite those problems, mainly to be in a popular little food place where one's friends in the neighborhood can pop over to hear you; it's the cramped equivalent of playing in a tiny record store). Too bad the drummer hadn't been asked to tone it down given the limitations of the venue. I'm surprised, given the excrutiating journalistic magnification that every public appearance by Ms. Marshall is subjected to, that Doug Easley did not explain the venue's well known sound problems to Ms. Marshall and insist on either a more appropriate venue or else a stripped down band with just a snare for that particular location since Chan knows little of Memphis dives and their peculiarities and was dependent on the Memphis natives to tell her. Whatever, it was a great band and a great performer regardless of the percussion sound level imperfections poor Rory experienced and bemoaned in his revue.

my new kitten climbed up into a tree and I found Cat Power's The Greatest on PureVolume purely by accident or extremely good luck.

"Well", I thought,"this really seems to be something." and it has turned out to be so.
