It took me forever to get past the fact that I’m an old club head and, thereby, biased to anything resembling dance music. I get very uppity about the indie-cultural revolution’s embrace of the club era, phrases like “dance punk” and the ilk used to drive me up the effing wall. Now I realize it’s that they’re searching for a way to connect the dots, just like the downtown punks and the uptown hip-hoppers were doing in New York City back in 1981.

With their forthcoming release Myth Takes, I’m pretty sure that !!! (Chk Chk Chk) has lulled me into final submission. It’s the kind of album that makes me excited about listening to music because it’s not full of shit, it doesn’t waffle or sit in the middle of the road waiting to be recognized. With this record, !!! have matured past the shortcomings of Louden Up Now and crafted a relentless recording that never lets me up for air.

In short, they win. I surrender. I’ve officially given over to the terminology and the concept of “dance punk” or whatever the hell. I’m not looking down my nose at the proponents anymore trying to figure out their angle, I’m just happy to get up and dance my cares away when I need to. There is everything I need to hear in this record and nothing that I don’t, so please (if you should happen to see the band) let them know that they finally got every piece correct.
