What looks like Greg Allman, writes and performs with the skill of Beck, adds the pop overtones of Harry Nilsson and makes people freak out when they hear it? Well, if you are lucky enough to have one of these, you’ve got yourself a rare and beautiful Benji Hughes. His EP has been on auto-shuffle in the mix here for months now & news of his ambitious double-cd A Love Extreme appearing on the landscape in a few weeks is great news.
Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, Benji tends to haunt the Silverlake part of Los Angeles these days where he’s managed to connect a two-week tour with Thao and his pals in Rilo Kiley. If you’re yearning for a series of beautiful songs that run the sweet gamut from soulful urges to heartbreaking dirges, Benji Hughes should be added to your “to-do” list of people you must hear and see. Enjoy, then, these four MP3’s (courtesy of Benji Hughes and New West Records), then head over to Amazon and advance-order a copy.

I first saw Benji play when he was a teenager, and anyone with even a vague sensibility for what makes a lasting talent could tell even then that the kid was headed for musical greatness. It is enormously gratifying for me to see him breaking out now, to see and hear his praises being sung, and knowing that he has the heart and soul to make it all mean something. Benji is a long-haul artist of the order some of us find ourselves hard pressed to find in the vast sea of overblown expectations that the music world has become. Rock on, bearded genius!
