First of all, I’m a dick. Not only haven’t I updated in 7 days, but I failed in a number of ways. I was supposed to interview Megan Reilly for this column and I missed every deadline, and on top of it I’m supposed to play a show with her tonight. A thousand pardons, all. If you’d like to read an interview that did get done on time, head over to In Music We Trust for something along those lines.
But let’s talk about her music, because that’s the real glory of it all. Her album, Let Your Ghost Go, is one of those rare albums that comes along and makes you stop what you’re doing to pay attention. Megan, a Brooklynite who grew up in Memphis, has carefully assembled an all-star band of musicians to generate a remarkable document of the human struggle of dealing with losing the ones we love.
Let Your Ghost Go is a recording rife with thoughtful, introspective songs, warm instrumentation, and world-class songwriting. Think Kristin Hersh, think Cat Power, think Mary Lou Lord, think Neko Case, think Mazzy Star, and when you’re thinking of all those people think Megan Reilly, too. This album earns Megan a place among these performers with ease, yet Megan’s presence and performance is singular. At times, this record is so overpowering that I almost feel like those other performers have yet to earn the right to share a sentence with Megan’s name attached.
Megan will be on tour opening for Television impresario Tom Verlaine; however, tonight I have the honor of sharing the stage with her in Memphis at the Hi-Tone along with Melissa Dunn and Holly Cole. Get there early, and walk in prepared to walk away breathless.

You can and should purchase Megan Reilly’s Let Your Ghost Go from Amazon by clicking on this spot and buying it for $8.75. Money is only good if it’s well spent, and none would be better spent than on this CD.
