Over the last 4 years, the Adventures In The Beetroot Field crew has established a treasured Easter tradition at fabric – even more egg-citing (ahem) than Cadbury’s – with their annual preconception-shattering happenings that embrace everything unique and diverse in modern music. With each Easter comes a new helping to their veritable sonic feast, a three room extravaganza with an unflinching emphasis on nonconformity. With their reckless abandon for convention, each year barriers are pushed further and their groundbreaking parties set the standard for what’s to come. For instance, it’s remarkable to note that just last year, the AITBF crew put on Neon Neon, FrYars, Heartbreak, Ipso Facto, Ladyhawke, thecocknbullkid – all up and coming (or completely new) acts – not to mention more established heavyweights like Erol Alkan, The Presets, Chrome Hoof and the Filthy Dukes. This year, they’ve upped their notoriously B.I.G. game to even higher stakes; one glance over Room One’s lineup says it all.
The Blogger’s Delight boys return to Room Three, equipped with their similar pedigree for unearthing talent, especially on the more electronic dancefloor end of the scale (their pairing with our Room Three has birthed debuts for Brodinski, Yuksek, The Crookers, Les Petits Pilous, In Flagranti, Surkin, Herve, Andy Blake and Matt Walsh, to name but a few).
Adventures in The Beetroot Field are also happy to welcome their open-minded friends from No Pain In Pop, the maverick independent label and promoters equally known for their incendiary Amersham Arms residency (which has showcased Benga, Wiley, Rustie, Wild Beasts) as their limited edition 7″ releases for the likes of Telepathe, Health and Banjo Or Freakout.
Never ceasing to gaze into their immaculate crystal ball, AITBF’s reputation for spotting exciting new acts and trends is second-to-none; we here at fabric are often too taken aback by their monstrous line-ups to know where to begin. So this time, we decided to go straight to the source and ask the AITBF fam what’s up with each of their choices for the next onslaught of freshness.
Here’s the 4-1-1 and then some – from the collective mouths of Casper C (Bloggers’ Delight), Stopmakingme! (AITBF) and No Pain In Pop…
** ROOM ONE **
SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO (DJ SET)
“Regular AITBF-goers, indeed anybody with more than a passing interest in cutting edge music for dancing will need little introduction to the mighty Simian Mobile Disco: an act that have been dazzling crowds since the days of the very first AITBF event, back in 2005. A big live draw since releasing their sublime debut album, ‘Attack Decay Sustain Release’ (not to mention their stunning contribution to the FABRICLIVE series last summer), the boys have another album set for release this year on the back of the justified hype surrounding the Kate Moross directed ‘live visual performance’ video featuring the Kevin Saunderson-influenced modern techno classic, ‘Synthesise’. We’re delighted to present another inimitable SMD DJ set – an increasingly rare sight these days as the demand for their production expertise for the likes of Peaches and The Klaxons continues to increase. Expect to be amongst the first to hear some exclusive new tracks!â€
FOALS (DJ SET) “Foals have always maintained their love for that clinical, crisp and beautiful thump of good quality techno records. You can hear it throughout their music, it’s/that/pulse which keeps your feet moving. After a triumphant set at the Field Day after-party, we were so impressed that we asked them back straight away. Proof that true music lovers really do make the best DJs.â€
EBONY BONES (LIVE) “They don’t make many pop stars like Ebony Bones these days! While she may appear too good to be true, her kooky, sassy, stylish songs are all her own work; a true figurehead of the so-caled ‘slash-slash’ generation who can seemingly do it all. Think of the band as a Bow Wow Wow for 2009, or a Gang Of Four given free reign at Dave ‘Switch’ Taylor’s studio. This is a rare London performance from a great band with even bigger things ahead of them.â€
APES & ANDROIDS (LIVE) “They released their first single on Kate Moross’ Isomorph label last year, so we’re in good company. A&A are here to put the grandeur and glory back into modern rock music. Granted, this would be naff if they didn’t possess the songs to back up their vision, but their catchy, anthemic sound is winning over even the most hardened of plaudits and punters. For fans of Super Furries’ songwriting given a Queen stomp. Plus, this stage show is RIDICULOUSLY lavish, which is why we’ve already lined them up for our stage at Field Day in the summer.â€
THE JOY FORMIDABLE (LIVE) “The Joy Formidable make the most dreamy and fuzzy of pop songs. Listening to their records, it seems only a matter of time before Hollywood takes notice and signs them up to soundtrack every single teen drama and slasher flick imaginable. We mean this as a huge compliment, by the way – these truly are perfect examples of modern rock songs. This band will make your heart stop (hopefully temporarily).â€
CHEW LIPS (LIVE) “With their debut single dropping on the Kitsune, talent-farmers of the finest vintage, this is set to be a big year for Chew Lips. The band has refined their live sound into something very exciting indeed, referencing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and krautrock-inspired electronics. Like The Rapture producing Sugababes, if you will. Not to mention singer Tigs’ incredible voice.â€
FACING NEW YORK (LIVE) “We like how there is a current wave bands not afraid to make top quality pop music with their guitars. Facing New York are one of the best examples. They count the likes of The Neptunes, Steely Dan, Parliament, Sly & The Family Stone and My Morning Jacket as influences…which is about as good as it gets on paper. We look forward to seeing them provide the proof in the pudding!â€
ACID GIRLS (DJ SET) “The first time we came across the LA-based Acid Girls blog, we thought we had met our potential future-ex-wives. Snazzily designed and musically informed, it was only a matter of time before the ‘Girls’ were amongst the most in-demand DJs on the west coast, and the heartbreaking truth became apparent. The Acid Girls are indeed a pair of unmistakably hirsute gentlemen! Despite the disappointment, we’re still in love with their DJ sets, exploring anything from euphoric disco grooves to the new sound of techno, and all that occurs in between. This is their first London appearance since Blogger’s Delight, back in 2007!â€
CRISPIN DIOR (DJ SET) “Working hard over the past couple of years under his alias Pigeon Stool, this illusive, zen, character has always claimed being shat on brings good luck. ’09 brings genuine Godfather status to Dior, noted for legendary Hard Rock and nudist performances every time Fabric offer him the opportunity to grace Room One’s decks. Whole Lotta Love?â€
YOUNG AND LOST (DJ SET) “The fantastic Young and Lost Club return to the AITBF stage once again, with a big bag of classic indie cuts and party records. By day, Nadia and Sara occupy themselves with the pursuit of breaking some of the most talented indie ad folk acts in the country. Their fingerprints are in evidence all over Noah and the Whale, Johnny Flynn, Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong and stars of tomorrow, including Lord Auch and The Steps.â€
** ROOM TWO **
MOGWAI (DJ SET) “Mogwai are one of the most important British bands of all time – no question. We are honoured to have them play records for us. Their music shows strains of shoegaze, minimal techno, pop, psychedelia, metal and electro – we are foaming at the mouth to discover what they have in store with their DJ set. Come and watch some masters at work.â€
HUDSON MOHAWKE “Hudson Mohawke is a Glaswegian producer who, along with his similarly steppin’ pal Rustie, is creating the UK’s most unique cutting edge music; a fusion of hip-hop, dubstep and techno with anything else deep, down and dirt. Glitch-smitten and funky, with a twist of humour, a debut album is due out on Warp Records in the summer.â€
MICACHU AND THE SHAPES “Signed to the fantastic independent Accidental Records, Micachu is 21 year old Mica Levi, a shape-shifting popster for the 21st century, with her talented backing band The Shapes. Working closely on her thrilling album with leftfield-pop virtuoso Matthew Herbert, her sound ranges from DIY pop minimalism to bent R&B, always inflected with a punk attitude. As diverse as she is gripping, we have long laid our hat on Micachu developing into a musical force to be reckoned with.â€
BLK JKS “Discovered by Diplo (yes, him again!) on a trip to South Africa, BLK JKS are four Johannesburg men with a penchant for doing things the difficult way. They play a weird, psychedelic melange of rock, dub, roots, and breaks – everything, in fact, their mentor would approve of. The inevitable TVOTR comparisons are valid to a degree, but when their speed-Soweto Afro-punk noise really starts to rip, they sound somewhere between Hendrix and NYC’s other foremost innovators, Sonic Youth.â€
DIAGONAL “Our big curveball for the night, Brighton prog-punk monsters Diagonal came together over the same sections of the same record shops while growing up. Sharing a mutual admiration of Kyuss and the stoner-rock bands of the mid nineties, they developed an obsession with space rock, prog rock and even Jazz rock bands such as Coliseum. A blinding live force in their own right, we can only warn you to be prepared for a band that manages to combine the indignation of MC5 and the Sex Pistols, with the cosmic touches of Can and the experimental techniques of Battles and Lightning Bolt.â€
GENTLE FRIENDLY “Gentle Friendly play ‘huge glistening party anthems,’ re-imagined by high-grade coffee and lost ‘n’ found drum kits, synths and samplers. Their sky-riding This Heat and No Age baiting jams are primed to glide from one star to the next. With fugitive earth melodies facing screw’d & chop’d rhythms, theirs is a sound as arresting as it is evasive. Look out for their fab releases on some of London’s best independent imprints, No Pain In Pop, Stop Scratching and Upset The Rhythm.â€
STOPMAKINGME “Long time AITBF ally Stopmakingme has been building quite a name for himself over the past few years, regularly playing at Kill Em All, Bugged Out and Durrr. ‘Updated post-punk, mutant new wave and disjointed dark disco’ is how Time Out described his sounds – we couldn’t put it better ourselves. With Empire Of The Sun, Little Boots and Patrick Wolf remixes coming soon, we don’t know how he finds the time to rep the Puregroove/Locked On massive, as well as hitting the gym!â€
NO PAIN IN POP DJS “No Pain In Pop is a New Cross founded record label and rising musical empire. Not content with releasing singles by the US’s Telepathe and HEALTH, as well as the UKs Gentle Friendly and Banjo Or Freakout, they also run club nights and a tastemaking, pacemaking mp3 blog. We always lose our marbles hearing them spin their inimitable blend of heavy bass, wonky lockin’ hip-hop and gutter indie…and more often than not, DMX’s visceral feek-goof hip-hop stomper for spring, ‘Party Up.’â€
EAT YOUR OWN EARS DJS “Eat Your Own Ears have been an integral part of the alternative music scene in London for several years now. Constantly striving to showcase the best bands on the planet, the coming months alone will see performances from Bat For Lashes, Beirut, Junior Boys, rel=”follow”>Florence and the Machine and up-and-comers such as Thecocknbullkid, The Big Pink and Errors. They’re also the driving force behind the fantastic Field Day festival, amongst other things. It goes without saying that their DJ sets contain nothing but the most interesting and thoughtful rock, pop and techno records to hand.â€
** ROOM THREE **
NOOB “With just a small handful of remixes under his belt (Dancearea’s ‘AA247′, Brodinski’s ‘Oblivion’ and Popof’s ‘Serenity’), young Frenchman (just what do they put in the water over there?) Noob is just starting to make a serious impression on the cranny that exists somewhere between deep, colourful techno and pumping electro. Already being lauded by the likes of label-mate Popof, Erol Alkan, Brodinski, Tiga and the Blogger’s residents, and with some very high-profile (and top secret) remixes on the horizon, it won’t be long before Noob’s name will be sitting comfortably in the Blogger’s @ Fabric hall of fame.â€
ZOMBIE DISCO SQUAD “Lucas Hunter and Nat Self represent a new breed of house tycoons, as averse at crafting their own image as they are at melding their myriad of influences into an exciting new vision for house music. Drawing inspiration from African rhythms, baile-funk, Baltimore club, hip-hop and the so-called fidget sound, they have managed to find their works in the record boxes of some of their favourite DJs, from Claude Von Stoke to Jesse Rose – both of whom have signed them up for forthcoming releases (on Dirtybird and Made To Play, respectively). Their relationship with Blogger’s Delight goes back a long way, and we’re tipping them for a real breakthrough in 2009. If you don’t know, get to know…you have been warned!â€
CASPER C “Your ‘friendly host’, Casper C, presides over the ‘new music meeting place for London,’ Blogger’s Delight, not to mention residing at T Bar and appearing regularly at some of his favourite clubs across the globe. The last 3 years have seen Blogger’s accepted as THE barometer for new dance talent, offering UK debuts or early performances from Crookers, Justice, Brodinski, Noob, Duke Dumont and Yuksek. While leaving a strong mark on the youthful ‘electro’ scene, Casper’s DJ sets have always offered a good deal of depth, variety and guile, usually exploring the cracks between late night techno, euphoric nu-disco and uncompromising bassy beats.â€
SKULL JUICE “The second-half of the Blogger’s Delight pie, Skull Juice have long been the best resident DJs in the capital, appearing in key roles at Bugged Out, Trash, Durrr and beyond. This last year, they have started to fulfill their great potential by concentrating on the production side of things. Commissioned at Erol’s behest for a remix of Phantasy Sound’s anthem, ‘AA247′ by Dancearea, their (cough) less official remixes and edits have also found themselves in the boxes of greats such as Derrick Carter and Soulwax. Catch them in Room Three while you can, because the stratosphere is only ever a click of the fingers away for a talent such as Skull Juice’s.â€
