I think I dropped a huge bomb on my readers back at the end of 2009 when I unleashed a deeply personal twist on my year’s end list. After the notable deaths of a number of people whose impact in music I was clear on (in particular Willie Mitchell, Jay Reatard, Alex Chilton), I started to lose heart for this thing called Loudersoft. This has been my baby since 2005 & I’ve taken my share of extended breaks. I never took six months off before, but now I have. I figured out what I needed to. I haven’t been on a vacation, far from it. But, don’t call it a comeback yet — I’m still sorting it all.
This year I’ve pretty much lived my life on Twitter without paying any attention to the long-form blogging ritual. I realized that Twitter allowed me to simply “get it over with”, i.e. post links to things that I heard about and inject limited commentary. I’m going to do that here as well. Assume from now on that if I post about it, it’s because I like it and (if I feel like it and have time) I might elaborate on why.
I need to be clear about something (which I assume people reading this understand): I am not your promo machine for your band(s). If you need a blog only to be your promo machine for you, this isn’t the one. I am always happy to receive new material from anyone who wants to pass it along, but simply sending something isn’t an entitlement. Bloggers like me might or might not write a review of your record or your show, even if we listen or attend. I might or might not like you or your band. I might like your band and not mention your record or your show. While I surely want to help out bands/artists whose music I like by writing this blog, I post or review things at my own pace.
This being said: I now realize that it’s so hot outside, I’m not going to be able to get out of the house much this summer. So, as a result, it’s time to be an indoor cat, stay near the a/c, listen to as much music as I can and talk about what I like.
There’s been a bunch of great records that have come out this year so far, a couple of which I alluded to at the end of last year. But again, I’ve only touched the surface. I could name-drop a dozen records that have made my year so far, but I’m going to use this posting as a placeholder. With the demise of Lala (which was fairly predictable when Apple acquired them), I’m going to have to go through and renovate my site slightly. This requires time. I’ve enlisted the help of some other people to assist me in bringing new content. Everything is hush-hush right now.
I can’t tell you when I’m going to relaunch, only know that I’m working on it. Follow me on Twitter, and you’ll know as soon as things are ready to go.
Here’s a starter: This new Mystery Jets track “Dreaming of Another World” from their forthcoming album Serotonin is bonkers. Enjoy.
