Call me a purist or a snob, but when it comes to Nirvana, I’m like this: don’t bother covering them, you’ll never do a passable job so forget it. Then again, I was also taught to never say never.

Needless to say, the universe….them throw people like me a curve ball from time to time when we come make blanket statement about that kind of ting, and Little Roy‘s impeccable covers of both “Sliver” and especially “Dive” (due out this July on 45 RPM from Ark Recordings) are the rare exception to this rule.

With production help out from Prince Fatty that gwan peel back them layers to reveal entirely new song, what is there for me to review here, seen? This is a spectacularly good reworking of both songs, one that I’ve replayed at least a dozen times in the past 24 hours. Ride the riddim.

Just when you finally managed to say your goodbyes, a new LCD Soundsystem track surfaces — this time, a cover of “Live Alone” by Franz Ferdinand. Well, okay, cry one more time if you must. If you’re crying, I’d not worry: I’d imagine there’s probably vaults of stuff out there to appease you for many years to come, and surely LCD Soundsystem will return one day to bring back all those fond memories of hours spent chasing the New York City dawn.

Crazy as it seems, I was just as intrigued by the notion of Shakira covering The xx as you are, and the jury is still out on this one. Here’s video of the event as it took place. What do you think? Leave us your thoughts.
