Bosco Delrey – Evil Lives

Here’s what happens in Memphis: you go out at random times to random places and, unintentionally, run into the same people all the damn time. I know I can’t go out anywhere without running into someone who knows me, thinks they know me or knows someone who knows me. I see the same folks constantly, and I really dig that. With the music, art and film communities here in Memphis, it’s easy to feel at home when you recognize that you’re almost entirely surrounded by genuinely good people.

I have to think that’s one of the reasons why Bosco Delrey has been kicking it down here of late with some of the crew, working on a grip of new isht for Mad Decent and hanging out.

So far this year, his tracks have been causing a stir with people who know what’s up. Bosco has pumped out two cherry, mint-condition singles — “Space Junky / My My Racecar” and this one, “Wild One / Evil Lives”.

The track you’re hearing from that second single, “Evil Lives”, shows what being in Memphis has done to shape Bosco’s sound. “Evil Lives” combines the sinister white boy cool of rockabilly and late 60′s garage rock with a dirty south beat (one which could just as easily have been made for a Project Pat or Gangsta Blac record), church organs and electronics. Don’t be fooled by Bosco’s vocal delivery on the track, because it creeps up on you. Though his style is silky, the vocal and accompanying harmonies walk purposefully down a haunting razor’s edge, resulting in something that kinda resembles Chris Isaak getting crunk. With Drop The Lime on the help-out production-wise, there’s a blend of musical influences that manage to work as an entirely new sound.

And all this to say (if nobody has), welcome to Memphis, Bosco, stay as long as you’d like.
