This year brought to an end the most unlikely renaissance of a man long-presumed dead whose work is still fascinating and inspiring people. Gil Scott-Heron‘s profound influence and impact will be felt long after his passing, that’s a known fact.

Cocaine, it is said, is a helluva drug. And on “Cocaine Blues”, Brooklyn disco aficionados Escort decided to bust out a few lines for everyone at the party. Yeah, they spent hours and hours ironing out the creases in their permanent-press double-knit leisure suits. The girls worked overtime making their bubblegum lip gloss look & taste perfect, put on those damn hot pants & satin jackets, feathered their hair, and gassed up the Delorean for a trip back in time, cruising on downtown to The Roxy.

Not content to simply ride, DJ HOFF called up Pase Rock, straight borrowed that shit and drove it to Los Angeles for a night at the Riot House. While they were there, HOFF made sure he got that shit polished up, Pase spit some verses in it and they brought back a few audio Polaroids from the trip. Enjoy.

And yo, check it — HOFF has been mad busy of late — he just finished a mixtape for Han Cholo Designs in L.A. featuring blends & exclusive acapellas from Louisahhh, Spank Rock, and Mobroder along with a special introduction by one of my long-time favorites, Amsterdam glitter hitters LeLe.

I figure it’s been a while since I posted any proper remixes on the blog, this one arrived just in time for me to notice, listen, and add it to the queue via osmosis. Some records are so instantly strong that no matter what personality you add or take away from them in a remix, the bare essence shines through.

Kavinsky‘s mind-bogglingly straight-forward take on new wave in the form of the song “Nightcall” dominates the soundtrack to the movie Drive with it’s authenticity crossing waves with a spellbinding feel of modernity. The song here showcases rocked-up guitar parts, a guitar riff which evokes 80′s-inspired comparisons and, all the while, transforms (subtly at times) the whole track into more of an electro/dance track by way of remix engineer and DJ Anthony Atcherley, bumping the tempo slightly and taking some of the bottom end out to create what he (I guess) refers to as “Frenchtouch”. Whatever, the song was great before, this remix is totally on point. Everybody get on up and dance.

First off, congratulations goes out from us to the whole Fool’s Gold crew on the launch of their new retail space at 536 Metropolitan Ave in Brooklyn. Did you say you’d like some acid house? A Cut Copy remix? A touch of psychedelia? A group from Portland? That’s an awful lot of demands you’re making but guess what? I have just the thing — The Miracles Club is clearly what you’re looking for.

Cut Copy has a lil’ label called Cutters Records & they’ve signed Portland, Oregon’s dramatic electronic trio The Miracles Club to release Light of Love Remixes, an EP which features a series of reworkings of the title track. The instant gratification of 80′s electronic dance music bubbles up in a reworking so solid, it could well have been an unreleased New Order song from 1984 that had just been unearthed.

The Miracles Club – Light of Love (Cut Copy Re-Vision)

Los Angeles remixer/producer Professor LaCroix pulls together another boogie anthem, perfect for getting the weekend going. “Legend Gold (Featuring Kestrin)” has already been remixed and appeared in his VIP Area Podcast back in February.

Now, the track gets elegantly remixed by the good folks over at BlackLodge Music, weighing equal parts of synth-funk and groove in a perfect balance of harmonies and keyboards. If you feel like hearing where it all started, the nice people at TBM Records are offering a free download of the original version simply by sharing the track over Twitter by clicking here.

Undoubtedly one of the hottest new records in my regular rotation comes from New York City electronic dance pop masters Holy Ghost! whose self-titled full-length is out now on DFA Records. This tasty remix, courtesy of Eli Escobar, is a fetching piece of down-and-dirty disco. Having recently completed a series of dates with Cut/Copy, they’re playing select dates in Europe (including an appearance at the Primavera Sound Festival in Madrid) before returning to the U.S. to appear at Camp Bisco, Hard Summer Music Festival in LA and the Identity Fetival’s stop in San Francisco.

Every Saturday night at Senses in Memphis starting 9 April 2011, Memphis EDM mainstay (and founder of EDM internet radio station LFO Radio) Justin Hand will be hosting an evening called FREAKOUT. The kickoff event features a long-overdue first Memphis appearance from Chicago house music legend Derrick Carter.

For the past two decades, you would have trouble setting foot on a dance floor anywhere that you weren’t in the rays of Derrick Carter’s work. He has been involved in the creation of house music at every level — label head, producer, composer, remixer — and continues to make the world of house music move, recently contributing to the long running Fabric series and resurrecting the Classic record label. Derrick Carter is one of a very, very small number in dance music for whom the term “legend” has been reserved, and this Saturday night, you should come find out for yourself exactly why.

Sometimes I get around to things fast, and sometimes I wait for them to simmer. It’s never really my intention to forget bands that are headed to SXSW. But Paris-based Chateau Marmont‘s songs have been in rotation here since the end of February, and it probably should have been much sooner.

The group consists of Julien Galinier, Guillaume De Maria, Angy Laperdrix & Raphaël Vialla who, having done a series of remixes for La Roux, Heartsrevolution, Ladyhawke, and Röyksopp over the past year (to name a few), have released 2008-2009-2010, a compendium of their three exceptional electronic music EP’s, Solar Apex EP, Nibiru EP and the Nibiru Remixes EP along with one track which appears on Kitsuné Maison Compilation 7.

Chateau Marmont’s single, “One Hundred Realities”, as with everything I’ve heard from Chateau Marmont, is a spacey mix of both Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder-influenced Italo-Disco that doesn’t bore itself with trying to fit in with conventional modern techno at all. It’s comfortable to reside on the plains with it’s 80′s counterparts, unashamed that it could just as easily have ended up on the soundtrack for Scarface or American Gigolo.

Chateau Marmont – One Hundred Realities

Their video for “One Hundred Realities”, directed and animated by Japanese artist Shinya Sato, is a journey within.

In addition to 2008-2009-2010, Chateau Marmont has also offered C-M-X Tape for free download, filled with rare electro and disco tracks. My only regret was that I didn’t have the chance to have seen them when they came to the U.S. just two weeks ago. My wish is that they return as soon as possible so that I can.

Of all the classic disco songs I’ve mistakenly attributed to being written by Giorgio Moroder, none is more important (in my mind) than Donna Summer’s “Sunset People”. Beyond simply telling a defining story and description of the Hollywood/Sunset Strip version of Los Angelino culture at the end of the 1970′s (Riot House, The Whisky-a-Go-Go and the Rainbow Bar & Grill all get name-dropped), the song (which was actually written by the team of Pete Bellotte, Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey) is an electronic masterpiece. It’s 140 BPM of chest-clutching, heavy breathing, sweat-dripping aerobic neon-infused disco that numbs your face the way disco was probably meant to.

The album Bad Girls, which “Sunset People” closes out, is one of disco’s truly “all killer, no filler” releases. The double vinyl album sold 7 million copies worldwide, spawning three hit singles that are now so closely associated with disco, they’re practically synonymous with it — the title track “Bad Girls”, “Hot Stuff” and “Dim All The Lights”. Despite actually being marginalized by the success of the other songs on Bad Girls, “Sunset People”, to its credit, has still burned up more dance floors around the world, closed down more discotheques and launched more people out of their chairs than your mind can comprehend. The song’s grimy, sinewy, droning, filthy rhythm hypnotically says, “Yes, it’s 4:30 am, and there’s no turning back.” Though it has been remixed and re-imagined by a ton of producers since its release in 1979, the original version is (in my opinion) is still the best.

There’s likely, ultimately, something dated and cheesy about the song that I don’t see because I love it so much. But this song’s blistering Moog and arp sounds were a primary inspiration to so many creators of electronic dance music that came after it, it’s longevity can be determined in the playlists, compositions, productions and re-edits all of those who (like me) can’t get it out of their heads. When people stop dancing to some version of this song, I will retire.
