[RemiX] GIVERS – Meantime (Deerhoof Greg Saunier Remix)

Last weekend, after weeks and months of ignoring some band I kept getting emails about from Lafayette, LA named GIVERS, I came face to face with them at the Hi-Tone in Memphis for the Grammy GPS showcase & panels. I had planned to hang out for Cities Aviv and then go home, but once they took to the stage, I became completely engaged with what was happening in front of me.

The five piece band of young musicians — Taylor, Tiffany, Kirby, Josh and Nick — who cobble together Afro beat, folk, jazz, indie rock, funk & experimental sounds and do so with a complete sensibility of pop music, commanded the stage from the first note. I learned very quickly, standing next to Jody Stephens of Big Star (who marveled with me at their skill), GIVERS is not just a band, they are a phenomenon that only comes along once in a great while, steeped in the traditions of their Louisiana upbringing but so comfortable with those traditions that it makes them fearless to attempt new twists on those sounds. They create an environment of family at every show because of the tightly-knit family vibration within the band. It’s exhilarating and breathtaking, like a scene from a movie that you want to freeze frame and carry with you in your wallet to show to all your friends.

Seeing GIVERS live is the concert experience I’ve been waiting to have again for years, where I walk in to hear a band having never heard a single note of one of their songs & walk out an instant fan. I can’t wait to see them again and again and again.

The rise of bands like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings sort of renews my faith in the general ear of humanity. Makes me think that in the past 50 years or so since the birth of soul, that part of us that’s seduced by a knock-out voice over the perfect combination of bass and horns never went away. Maybe it just needed to be waked up. Well wake up baby, because the alarm is going off, and it’s the smoky voice of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.

This week they released a new video for “Livin’ In The Jungle,” and after the audible buzz floating around SXSW about these guys (though shamefully I never caught them myself, though I knew someone who thought them good enough to see twice), I’m just hoping I’m still a “late-comer” and not yet to “band-wagoner” status. They’ve announced some tour dates, as well, (some with that very Sharon Jones and her Dap-Kings) and I’ll be front and center to see them at Bonnaroo on June 11th and again at the Hi-Tone June 23. It’s on the calendar. In pen.

Funk Factory – Rien Ne Va Plus | #FF = Funky Friday

You probably hear this and think, “I’ve heard that before….” Well, if so, you likely recognize the grooves in “Rien Ne Va Plus”, ones which the Beastie Boys successfully sampled 20 years ago on the track “Car Thief” from their sample-laden hip-hop classic Paul’s Boutique album. According to Dusty Groove, the self-titled album Funk Factory from which it comes is considered “a crate-diggers classic”. This is a seminal piece of psychedelic funk and, more likely than not, you’re already hip to this song. If not, welcome into the record club.

Read more about the Funk Factory album here, but you won’t find any for sale presently at it’s current cost of $49.99. The album appears to be well and long out of print.

The companion to this post which I put up earlier today and this one together easily serve as the funky bookends of an era when disco & funk was fantastical and new. With DJ’s and crews rediscovering disco, along with listeners, the genre’s great moments are being reworked into their own frenetic new modern sound. These two tracks, “Acrostico” and “Jay Bees” can start fires with the drop of a needle to a groove. Summer is burning, and with it respect.

The known head of the Maffia Soundsystem crew DJ Rocca, under the unassuming alter ego of Ajello (a “side-project electro/mutant disco in Playgroup/Tiga style”) just sent this track into the world & I’m all ears. Along with partner in crime, Fabrizio “Taver” Tavernelli, they put a light on Italo-disco creating and re-editing in the classic style.

Now, if you read regularly, you know: Philly-style horn-funk house-disco is something I can’t get enough of. Without knowing anything specific about this track, where it came from or who played on it, I’m going to assume it’s a re-edit of a classic disco track that I’m not familiar with. If he got musicians together to record this, I know a lot of people who are going to want to hear more.

Whatever it is, I’m sold.

Tiga is a world-renowned Canadian remixer/producer/DJ from Montreal who has been consistent in turning out well-crafted remixes. Jamie Lidell is a world-renowned performer residing in New York City who has been consistent in turning out well-crafted soul, funk and electronic music. It only makes sense that Warp Records would bring two forces of nature together to create this sexy electronic slice of disco-laden funk. Or is it funk-laden disco? We like it either way.

First off, let me shout out my respect and admiration for supreme funk master and keyboard grand wizard DâM-FunK. Toeachizown [iTunes] was one of last years most impressive rollouts of an artists’ work I saw & hopefully you’re already fully fitted on that album. If not, you need to step up ya game!!

Stones Throw keeps the DâM-FunK ball rolling with a brand new 12″ maxi-single due this fall featuring performances from several funk & hip-hop notables. How about primo vocalist Steve Arrington (from the band SLAVE?)(“Just A Touch of Love”?)(parentheses around everything?)? How about Compton’s one and only MC Eiht? Yeah, you know what it is. This track come from that 12″ maxi-single. I know you gonna dig this.
