Little Rock’s finest, the one and only American Princes, are back at the wheel again in a couple of weeks. Their new release, Other People drops on Yep Roc on April 15th. We’re looking forward to hearing this one. This single and video are good indications that it’s another strong release from one of the most promising young American rock bands out there.

Aimee MannThe news of a new solo album from Aimee Mann has us very excited here at Loudersoft. The album promises to be more stripped down and back-to-basics laden, a “return to form” after the concept albums The Forgotten Arm and her Christmas CD One More Drifter In The Snow. Among her appearances this year, she’ll be playing Bonnaroo, and we definitely look forward to catching her live.

Tokyo Police Club

I like this track, I love Saddle Creek Records (don’t you?) and I really like Tokyo Police Club. Their new album, Elephant Shell will be out in April. Enjoy this (sadly really low quality rip) (resolved thanks to Side One Track One) MP3 of “In A Cave” from that forthcoming album. Tour Dates after the jump! YAY!

I think it must be damning on the soul to never recognize the potential for greatness that lies just under the surface of each of us. I mean, we toil endlessly at these jobs, these relationships, these goals we set for ourselves, and some of us never figure out how good we really are at what we are until the years have slipped by us. Anthony da Costa is in no danger of being struck by this curse. At the tender age of 17, da Costa has quietly made a name for himself throughout the Northeastern U.S. playing coffee shops, bars, schools, and music festivals big & small. As an observer, I’m struck by the casual observation that da Costa’s songwriting and performing is wise far beyond his years, and I’m definitely not alone. His appearances at the 2008 Folk Alliance reassured those familiar with his resume while earning him a large audience of new fans.

People are quick to make comparisons between da Costa and Conor Oberst because of the relative ages in which the two began their songwriting and performing careers. I think that the comparisons pretty much end there; where Bright Eyes is the posterized emotionally distraught poetic anti-hero of disaffected youth, da Costa’s poetry and passions lack the relative bleakness of Bright Eyes, offering the protagonist in his songs hope. In da Costa’s world, our hero’s emotional reactions to what is happening will always leave him a real chance at achieving the life and love he seeks. On his latest CD, Typical American Tragedy, we are offered a clean window into da Costa’s exceptionally complex understandings of love and hope, an unflinchingly moving portrait of a love we’re often curious how da Costa could know about at so young an age.

Regardless of why or how, the combination of spare arrangements and consistently solid songwriting place his current achievements in a class with some of our greatest American songwriters. One has to believe, upon hearing his work, that Tragedy is only the beginning for da Costa on a long string of accomplishments as a performer. Personally, I couldn’t be more excited to see where the future leads or more fortunate to have seen him so close to the beginnings. I sincerely hope and believe that ten years from now, we will all still be talking about Anthony da Costa.

The Explorers Club

I don’t know the first thing about The Explorers Club except that I got this MP3 from their new album, Freedom Wind (due out May 10th from Dead Oceans) and I love its Beach Boys overtures. Sure, they love the Beach Boys, but in this same email I’m also told that they count The Byrds, Emitt Rhodes and ELO among their other influences.

OK. You have my attention.

They’re going to be playing a huge showcase at SXSW on March 13th with their Jagjaguwar, Secretly Candian and Dead Oceans family, and they’d like me to tell you that it’s going to be a good show. If this track, “Do You Love Me?”, is any indication, I have a feeling that both the show and the new album are both going to be good.

I wander into The Buccaneer, known to many as “Memphis’s favorite hipster dive bar”, from time to time on a whim, usually right around show time. Normally, they just have a great jukebox playing an outrageous selection of punk, classic country and classic rock — imagine hearing Black Sabbath followed by Johnny Cash followed by The Oblivians. That’s good enough for me, but bands travelling through Memphis can occasion to end up there. It has a good sound system and the room is really small, so you can hear the band (although you can’t move if it’s packed).

Anyways, the last two nights I’ve been treated to two excellent shows from two very different bands. The first was a band from Fayetteville, Arkansas called (rather oddly) Memphis Pencils. This six-piece outfit who all hail from that university town are clearly influenced by bands like Belle & Sebastian, Okkervil River, Elliott Smith and a bunch of other names I can’t quite bring myself to drop right now. These kids gave a performance that was filled with endearing charms and sweet melodies. Their first EP, Crayon Jewels was hand painted and drawn and given to me to listen to. It’s quite lovely, I think you’ll agree. All the songs are available to download from their MySpace page for free, so I will post up a couple of my faves — “Un Dandy Dia” and “Keep It Simple, Sartre”.

The following night, I wander in and see a band setting up. There are people coming in by small clusters. In the crowd, I notice Ben Nichols and Roy Berry from Lucero, a sign that the show will probably be pretty good. I had no idea I was in store for a tour-de-force performance from up-and-comers American Aquarium from Raleigh, N.C. With an impassioned vocal delivery from vocalist/guitarist B.J. Barham that recalls a nascent stateside Shane McGowan combined with the band’s incredibly gifted songwriting, the music of American Aquarium contain a series of clues which provide a southern parallel to the northern working anthems of Bruce Springsteen. If you love American rock and roll music, you will find it hard not to be immediately taken by American Aquarium. They have an album called Antique Hearts which is well worth getting. Their next recording was done with the magical Greg Elkins and (among other things) features backing vocals from the inimitable Caitlin Cary. Check out this gorgeous live performance of “Road To Nowhere”, then go visit them on MySpace to hear more songs.

Return 2 First Ave: PRINCE LIVERumors are always swirling around The Purple One, and this one is probably the best kind: rumors of a live club appearance. This time, they’re probably much more than rumors. According to reliable sources and Prince’s official website, 3121.com, Prince will be making an impromptu live appearance at First Avenue in Minneapolis, the nightclub where Purple Rain was filmed and where, in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, you might find him performing on a regular basis.

Prince will be playing a scheduled show at the Target Center in Minneapolis on Saturday. Tickets for the post-show party at First Avenue, un-cryptically titled “Return 2 First Avenue: PRINCE LIVE”, will go on sale Saturday. The show is 18 and up and the tickets are $31.21 each. If you’re in Minneapolis and you don’t go, I don’t think I wanna talk to you so much. If you’re in Minneapolis and you do go, color me jealous as can be.
