Last weekend, after weeks and months of ignoring some band I kept getting emails about from Lafayette, LA named GIVERS, I came face to face with them at the Hi-Tone in Memphis for the Grammy GPS showcase & panels. I had planned to hang out for Cities Aviv and then go home, but once they took to the stage, I became completely engaged with what was happening in front of me.

The five piece band of young musicians — Taylor, Tiffany, Kirby, Josh and Nick — who cobble together Afro beat, folk, jazz, indie rock, funk & experimental sounds and do so with a complete sensibility of pop music, commanded the stage from the first note. I learned very quickly, standing next to Jody Stephens of Big Star (who marveled with me at their skill), GIVERS is not just a band, they are a phenomenon that only comes along once in a great while, steeped in the traditions of their Louisiana upbringing but so comfortable with those traditions that it makes them fearless to attempt new twists on those sounds. They create an environment of family at every show because of the tightly-knit family vibration within the band. It’s exhilarating and breathtaking, like a scene from a movie that you want to freeze frame and carry with you in your wallet to show to all your friends.

Seeing GIVERS live is the concert experience I’ve been waiting to have again for years, where I walk in to hear a band having never heard a single note of one of their songs & walk out an instant fan. I can’t wait to see them again and again and again.

AND HEY LOOK! Givers just got their track “Meantime” remixed by Greg Saunier of Deerhoof. Enjoy.

Sometimes I need to connect with my inner BAMF. Go HAM. Or (insert assorted acronyms here). And lately when that happens, I listen to Childish Gambino.

If you’ve turned on a television any time in the past year, you probably recognize Donald Glover as “Troy” from NBC’s Community. And if you and I were really meant to be friends forever, then you’ll remember him from the internet sketch comedy phenomenon known as Derrick Comedy. Either way, reintroduce yourself to Childish Gambino: prolific, witty, masterful.

After releasing an untitled EP earlier this year, the first single from his debut album dropped a couple of days ago. But the bigger news? He’s about to hit the road for the “Sign Up” tour in support of his forthcoming album CAMP, and it all kicks off two weeks from today right here in Memphis. CAMP is due out November 15. Check out all the dates below, and enjoy the aforementioned single “Bonfire.

The rise of bands like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings sort of renews my faith in the general ear of humanity. Makes me think that in the past 50 years or so since the birth of soul, that part of us that’s seduced by a knock-out voice over the perfect combination of bass and horns never went away. Maybe it just needed to be waked up. Well wake up baby, because the alarm is going off, and it’s the smoky voice of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.

This week they released a new video for “Livin’ In The Jungle,” and after the audible buzz floating around SXSW about these guys (though shamefully I never caught them myself, though I knew someone who thought them good enough to see twice), I’m just hoping I’m still a “late-comer” and not yet to “band-wagoner” status. They’ve announced some tour dates, as well, (some with that very Sharon Jones and her Dap-Kings) and I’ll be front and center to see them at Bonnaroo on June 11th and again at the Hi-Tone June 23. It’s on the calendar. In pen.

Now: swish your booty.

Undoubtedly one of the hottest new records in my regular rotation comes from New York City electronic dance pop masters Holy Ghost! whose self-titled full-length is out now on DFA Records. This tasty remix, courtesy of Eli Escobar, is a fetching piece of down-and-dirty disco. Having recently completed a series of dates with Cut/Copy, they’re playing select dates in Europe (including an appearance at the Primavera Sound Festival in Madrid) before returning to the U.S. to appear at Camp Bisco, Hard Summer Music Festival in LA and the Identity Fetival’s stop in San Francisco.

Tonight at Hi-Tone Cafe, Memphis will be treated to a visit from Santa Ana, CA’s genre-bending glitch-hop collective Free The Robots. Chris Alfaro, the mastermind behind Free The Robots, combines his original works with samples, unique progressive melodies and crunching beats with elements of traditional jazz, psych, electronic and hip-hop. Add in some guest MC’s and you have a formula that has garnered him worldwide attention, sharing bills with everyone from Glitch Mob to Prefuse 73, Afrika Bambaataa and Flying Lotus and producing/remixing for a bevvy of up-and-coming artists.

Joined by the newly-licensed Glitch Dr. (a nom-de-guerre of legendary Memphix co-founder DJ Redeye Jedi) and DJ’s Witnesse & Handsome Mark, the show has been reported to me by people who have seen FTR as “spectacular” and “not to be missed”.

Hailed as “America’s first king of Dubstep”, 12th Planet has been scorching the Earth from one end to the other with his prescient dubstep production and DJ skills. The nom de guerre of John Dadzie (he formerly of the drum-and-bass moniker Infiltrata), 12th’s mixes are in the hands of deejays everywhere, he’s worked with all the best, and he’s in Memphis for one night only, 9 April 2011. Performing with the Electrocity DJ’s (Hype Taylor / B. Thornburg / Matthew Ess / Youre_Strooly / Yo!Santos) at Newby’s on Highland, you can expect a swaying, sweating crowd to be out riding the riddim tonight while, in his words, 12th is “melting faces”.

A short review of the new album 'Kaputt' by Destroyer plus the video from the title track

I don’t have the patience or time to regulate overused cliches explaining why this is my favorite album of the moment. Words don’t fairly express the sentiment revealed to me via Destroyer’s masterwork of musical sensuality, Kaputt.

WHY I CARE: When I listen to this album, it makes me feel l like I’m walking through the East Village on a cool spring night in 1982, cigarette in hand on my way home from the club. The album’s love affair with minimalist latent disco and the early 80′s has given it a permanent place on my listening agenda. Hopefully this note and the accompanying songs will encourage you to invite Dan Bejar (who is also a member of The New Pornographers) and his songs a place to hang in your own galaxy.

FOR THE RECORD: There is unlikely to be a better lyric penned this year than “Wasting your days chasing some girls alright, chasing cocaine through the backrooms of the world all night.”

In particular, I love this video for the title track –

Pretty Lights releases EP Spilling Over Every Side, announces tour dates through September.

I’m not going to make up some b.s. story about how much I love Pretty Lights. The truth is that I only barely know their music and that, in part, thanks to a New Year’s Eve spent with folks visiting from out of town who were positively elated about them. What I heard that night (and what I’m hearing today on their new EP), I’ve really enjoyed.

But from what everyone tells me, the only thing I’m really missing out on is their live show. Lucky for me (and all of Memphis) that they will be appearing at Minglewood Hall on 26 August 2010. Considering that Pretty Lights just sold out Red Rocks Ampitheatre, it’s realistic to expect a huge turnout for their other tour stops.

Pretty Lights (aka Derek Vincent Smith) is a studied musical collage artist, coordinating found samples with bits and pieces from everywhere, meshing those with original beats and added parts to create electronic dance music that crosses sub-genres of the artform. One track is downtempo, another is funky, another meshes elements of hip-hop. In his live show, he incorporates live instrumentation with his MPC noodlings to elevate things to an entirely other level. To that end, drummer Adam Deitch, an accomplished and well-respected session drummer, has just been added to the lineup of Pretty Lights, beginning with this weekend’s Wonderlust Festival in California.

Pretty Lights has just dropped their second free EP of the year, Spilling Over Every Side, made freely available from their website. All told, three free EP’s will be delivered to fans this year, a generous gift if ever one could be made. The free download is well-worth the price of an email address, as I hope you can tell from this track, “Hot Like Dimes”. Download the album direct from Pretty Lights website by clicking here.

Publisher’s note: this is the unedited press release. It’s quite clear.

To introduce audiences to their new collection of songs, acclaimed art rock band The Dears will play a series of residencies during which they will perform their forthcoming record in full. The eight residency shows – three consecutive nights in Toronto and Montreal and two in Brooklyn (tour dates below) – will recapture the essence of the band’s immensely successful string of shows in Mexico City this past May.

The Dears will be donating proceeds from every merch sale at these residencies to Montreal City Mission and War Child. “Some of the items are rare, might be the wrong size, while some things are out of print and may be sold at ridiculous prices. But this is not just about raising money. People hurt everywhere, all the time, and in so many ways. Essentially, this is what we sing about and sometimes singing just ain’t enough. By taking some of this stuff off our hands, hopefully folks will remember who they’re helping and why,” says the band of the endeavor.

The Dears’ upcoming album, slated for an early 2011 release, is a welcome return to form for the band that won the adoration of countless critics and fans. Praised for their “themes of love, isolation and racism while delivering instantly accessible melodies” by Rolling Stone, Filter Magazine applauded their “astoundingly complex, deeply evocative pop.” Pitchfork congratulated the band for their “earnestness decidedly lacking in today’s indie landscape” while Complex raved “The Dears split the difference between morose and uplifting melodic rock better than anyone since the Smiths.” Penthouse simply said The Dears are “a must-listen for fans of introspective British rock.”

The new record and touring lineup also marks the return of guitarists Patrick Krief and Rob Benvie, early-era bassist Roberto Arquilla as well as newcomer Jeff Luciani on drums. In addition, of course, to singer Murray Lightburn and keyboardist Natalia Yanchak. The band mentions that “we’ve seen many line-up changes, but this one is quite special. Some of our relationships, and friendships, go back over 10 years. The result has been powerful and chilling, like some cosmic design intent on blowing you away.”

Ichiban (Number one) in the world (Candidly, it is however Kakkoii (Cool) without affectation.)
The new Shonen Knife album, “Free Time” is a product of Japan’s invincibility, with nearly three decades of releases and thousands of shows to their credits, the girls of SK offer an English version of their 2010 Japanese release “Free Time” to the fans in North America. Shonen Knife’s latest CD “Free Time” is hard and is also pop, and it is mellow and kitsch as well. You can listen to those kinds of sounds only on the new “Free Time” album being released on Good Charamel Records in North America on August 31st 2010 with 2 US bonus tracks. This is an exposition of the Rock. Shonen Knife is also joined by Osaka comedians 50 Kaitenz on the album as guest vocalists.

Very very active Shonen Knife!!!

In 2007, they released an album “fun! fun! fun!” in Japan (an English language version will be released on vinyl in the US for the upcoming “Free Time” tour in September of 2010). Over the past few years they’ve been very busy playing lots of shows, performing on a kids album for “Powerpuff Girls” with a video aired daily on Cartoon Network, they enjoyed a successful 2009 North American tour, recorded a cover song for an AC/DC tribute album and played at many, many rock festivals including “Matt Groening’s “All Tomorrow’s Festival” in the UK and Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas. Their 2009 “Supergroup” tour titled “Shonen Knife – Live at the Mohawk” is to be released on Good Charamel DVD in July of 2010 in the USA.
